So this arrived in my mailbox last week. The latest by Brian Selznick. If you haven’t yet discovered him, you are in for a real treat. If you have, then well you know why I totally did the happy dance around my kitchen.
It did not disappoint. Such beauty. Such magic. I just love Brian’s storytelling. The book begins with his signature artwork that makes you feel like you’re watching a silent movie. There is such a lovely cinematic quality to each spread’s perspective. The art then flows seamlessly into text, which, like Brian’s previous books, tells yet another tale connected to real historical events and the theater. Although this book, like his others, is set in real life, it has such a magical quality that it feels like you’re reading a fantasy or magical realism. I guess that’s part of why I love his books so much, he captures the magic in the ordinary, everyday world around us.
If you haven’t already, get your copy pre-ordered today from your local indie bookstore or find it online here.
Now, I must go do what I do to every great book I read: Dissect it to see how the author did it!
